Since the two currently available gas engine options of Jeep Grand Cherokee have different gas recommendations and my car is a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland with 57L Hemi I want to make this thread to be specific to that engine. The manufacturer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance. Shell is what Ive found to be the best gas for this engine in this area.
Ive tried Chevron and Valero. Valero was terribledropped to 16-17 mpg. Chevron was ok and resulted in 18mpg worked the best in my old WRX.
Shell results in 18-19 mpg. Octane is just a measure of knock prevention that is required for higher compression high performance engines. The 57 is right on the edge of middle performance and sort of high performance.
So the use of premium over midgrade depends on a lot of factors. May 11 2018. I emailed technical support at Mopar back in 2014 they explained the engine and computer is programmed to run 89 octane as stated preferred in the ownership manual at least it was in 2014.

Putting 91 or 93 octane gas in without a tune will not create additional power as the stock PCM does not adjust to having higher octane.
As others have stated the higher octane gas may be cleaner but a good quality gasoline already has cleanersadditives in it. The 2020 F150 with the Coyote engine achieves 1723 MPG and the 2020 Ram 1500 with the 57 MDS gets the same mileage at 1723 despite the heavier steel body larger displacement and slightly more torque. With a 121 compression ratio the smaller 50 Coyote must use premium fuel.
