Engine in hemi 57 after sittion. The 57 Hemi is one of the most popular gasoline engines in North America and its pretty reliable for the most part however no engine is perfect and the 57 certainly has its flaws. These engines are known to snap exhaust manifold bolts and the MDS may be pretty stubborn at times but the most notorious problem on the 57 Hemi is the ticking noise dubbed the Hemi. Some Hemis do it and some dont.
My current Ram and Charger do not make any noise on start up even after sitting for weeks at a time. I had a 2015 Challenger with the 57L that clattered on start up even after sitting for 1 day. If it sat for a week it sounded like the engine.
There has been a lot of speculation about what the cause could be to make the lifters tap on a few Hemis particularly the 57 liters Hemi engines. If the lifters are tapping we should check whether we are employing the accurate kind of oil or if the amount of oil is optimum. If we use a low-quality fuel it can cause the 57 Hemi to tick.
Fuels with a high amount of ethanol or low. The 57 Hemi engine has aluminum cross-flow cylinder heads with two valves and two spark plugs per cylinder. The HEMI-shaped chambers now have a flatter design with squish shelves on both sides increasing efficiency and reducing emissions.
The camshaft actuates intake and exhaust valves by pushrods via rocker arms. 57 Hemi engines are good for 250-300 000 miles and more if properly cared for and regular maintenance is carried out. Early models suffered from valve seat issues which was rectified after 2008.
Its not uncommon to find high mileage 57 Hemi trucks running around today. Hemi Lifter Purge Guideline 1. Warm engine to standard idle conditions.
Listen to the engine for 30 to 60 seconds with the hood up and the engine cover removed. Engine noise may be in the form of a clicking chatter or clattering noise. If noise is present de-aeration of the lifters maybe required.
The higher the compression the higher the octane is required. The 57 Hemi is a high compression engine. Basically the airfuel mixture will explode under pressure without a spark.
When this happens you have detonation or knock. Ideally you want the point of detonation just after the point of spark. Dodge 1500 2007 57 hemi Recently developed low idle when stopped after warmed up drops to 500 rpm sometimes a little less- sets off low oil pressure code.
At same time MDS 4 cyl mode now coming on. One of the most common causes of the hemi tick is a problem with the lifters. There has been much speculation about what causes the lifters to tap on some hemis especially the 57-liter V-8 however there is no technical service bulletin or recall on this engine from Dodge.
If your hemi has lifters tapping it is important to check the amount of engine oil and make sure you are using the right type of oil for the vehicle. As a first tier OEM supplier Johnson understands lifters better than anyone. They dont make the factory lifters that come in newer GEN III Hemi engines but they probably should since they know what must be done to correct the problems.
Close tolerances affect most lifters and even minor variances can affect performance. I Have A 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 With The 57 Hemi V8 Engine. I Have Changed Oil Every 3 Months Even If It Did Not Have 3000 Miles On The Oil Change.
Now I Am Being Told That I Should Only Go By Mileage. Driven Between Oil Changes Has Been 1500 - 3000 Miles. My Question Is Is It Safe To Just Go By Mileage Only Especially Since This Modle Of Engine Has.
When the salesman pulled it around from behind their building there was quite the loud lifter tapping sound. We inquired about it and were told that it was normal for a late model Hemi engine at start up after sitting a while. We got in fired it up and the sound which was quite alarming for a brand new engine went on for another 30-60 seconds.
If your motor is cold from overnight or from sitting for several hours and you crank it and dont let it warm up to full temp say 5 minutes or so running and then you shut it off for a little while say 10 minutes or longer 9 times out of 10 next start will tick. The 57 Hemi engine has been plagued with many issues the last 10 years and this video is further discussion on the topic of lifter failure flatspotted cams. In this video I diagnose my 57 hemi with a bad lifter and camshaft we replace the lifters with hellcat lifters and replace camshaft with a greene racing 5.
