According to RAM the 64 HEMI engine is compatible with gas fuel with an 89 octane rating. You also can use a lower rating such as 87. The engine can work well with that.
However it would help if you didnt use a higher than 89 as it can damage the engine. Driving the trailer to the Outer banks at around 50 mph on average we got about 10 mpg there and 11 mpg back. The 64 gulps gasoline idling.

What is 64 HEMI. First included in the RAM 25003500 models back in 2014 the 64L HEMI V-8 engine came as a surprise due to its capacity to deliver more power than the 57L Hemi V-8. And it was mainly because of the 64Ls astonishing peak rate of 410 HP when compared to 395 HP from the 57L.
While towing that number would regularly drop down to rest around 10 mpg. That is the other major difference between the diesel which in our experience can average anywhere between 15 and 17 MPG. The good news is this heavy and powerful truck can actually get relatively good fuel mileage.

Ive got a 2017 2500 crew cab long box with the 64 and I really like it so far. I have a travel trailer that weighs around 4500 wet so not very much but it tows it like a breeze. Unloaded and with stock sized tires.
Cruise on 80 gets me 159 mpg and cruise on 70 gets me 194 mpg. Very happy with the mileage. This I had a 2016 64 Hemi with the 410 gears and this is about what I was getting mix driving on the highway without a load I got about 16-17 mpg and towing a 5th wheel I was getting about 8-9 mpg one thing I can say that it was quick when you get on it.

I installed earlier this week in my 2018 64 Hemi Power Wagon 2500. Seems that in all the modes it shifts smoother and better fuel economy especially in the eco non mds mode. If the duty is truly heavy the Ram 2500 with the big Hemi V-8 is as good a choice as any.
